Canine Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges with social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and specific interests. It’s a developmental disability that originates from certain brain abnormalities.

Individuals with autism can exhibit a wide range of social, behavioral, and communication skills. Interestingly, ASD is not exclusive to humans; it has also been identified in dogs, where it is referred to as Canine Dysfunctional Behavior (CBD).

What Triggers Autism in Dogs?
It is generally believed that dogs with CBD are born with the condition. Some research and studies suggest that exposure to harmful chemicals might increase the likelihood of CBD in dogs.

Additionally, some research posits that dogs with CBD may lack mirror neurons, making them behave differently from other dogs.

How Can We Identify Autism in Dogs?
Certain symptoms could indicate the presence of autism in dogs:

1. Physical Inactivity: Dogs are typically energetic and active. However, dogs with Canine Dysfunction Behavior (CBD) tend to be more lethargic and often avoid high-energy activities. They prefer staying in familiar environments.

2. Communication Issues:Dogs usually communicate their emotions through tail wagging and ear positioning. Dogs with CBD, however, may not show these typical signs, making their feelings harder to interpret. They often avoid eye contact and do not express emotions as other dogs might.

3. Repetitive Behaviors: Dogs with CBD frequently show obsessive and repetitive behaviors, such as repeatedly chasing their tails or continuous teething and grinding.

4. Antisocial Tendencies: Dogs are generally social beings that interact with humans, other dogs, and animals. Dogs with autism, however, often exhibit antisocial behavior.

5. Sensitivity to Stimuli:Dogs with CBD may show an increased sensitivity to activities or stimuli. They can be easily frightened by minor things like sudden noises or movements and may react aggressively to such triggers.

How to Care for an Autistic Dog
If you notice the above symptoms in your dog, it’s advisable to consult a veterinarian for their professional advice. Other ways to help manage your dog’s CBD include:

– Create a safe and secure environment for your dog.
– Avoid situations and locations that may cause stress or anxiety in your dog.
– Regular exercise can help distract your dog from compulsive behaviors and may reduce stress and anxiety.
– Consult your vet about dietary changes that might help manage their CBD.
– With the guidance of your vet, consider medication to help manage your dog’s condition.
